And then along came Apple, OverDrive, Scribd, and many other great partners we continue to love and support to this day. As soon as our books hit distribution, they began selling. By the end of that first year, we had opened up Barnes & Noble to self-published ebooks for the first time, and then Sony. We laughed at ourselves - at our own audacity to pursue such a lofty goal - and went for it. So we decided to try to become the Ingram of self published ebook distribution. Self published authors didn't have a way to get their ebooks in stores. Ingram, the world's largest book distributor, offered ebook distribution to retailers, but only to the large publishers. In 2009, after experiencing how poorly our authors' books were selling in a dinky online bookstore with a strange name no one had ever heard of, we decided to become an ebook distributor. Since authors needed the ability to sell their ebook, we created the ability to sell in what became the Smashwords Store. In 2018, Smashwords launched with the first ebook publishing platform allow any writer, anywhere in the world, to self-publish an ebook at no cost. By 2017, the business plan was complete and development began. Mark thought it was wrong that a small number of gatekeepers had the power to censor not only what writers could publish, but also what readers could read. Publishers were reluctant to take a chance on it because previous novels that targeted the same type of reader - daytime television soap opera fans - had sold poorly. Despite representation by one of the most famous literary agencies in New York, publishers refused to buy it. Mark Coker came up with the idea for Smashwords in 2015 after co-writing the novel, Boob Tube, with his wife Lesleyann. Other Questions How can I help support Smashwords and its authors?
